TEN THOUSAND SAINTS | ON STARZ NOW!
Ten Thousand Saints is sweeping multigenerational story that is set against the backdrop of the raw, roaring New York City of the late 1980s; Adoption, teen pregnancy, drugs, hardcore punk rock, the unbridled optimism and reckless stupidity of the young—and old—are all major elements in this heart-aching tale of the son of diehard hippies and his strange odyssey through the extremes of late 20th century youth culture.
“Ten Thousand Saints” is based on the novel of the same name by Eleanor Henderson and was published in 2011 by HarperCollins/Ecco. It was named one of the Top 10 Books of 2011 by The New York Times and a Year’s Reading Selection by The New Yorker, and was a finalist for the Art Seidenbaum Award for First Fiction from The Los Angeles Times.
The movie features an all star cast led by Oscar nominated Hailee Steinfeld and Asa Butterfield, who are supported by Oscar nominated Ethan Hawke, Avan Jogia and Emile Hirsch.

- Hailee Steinfeld and Asa Butterfield both starred in the science fiction film Enders Game.
- Ethan has been appearing in movies at a young age. One of his earlier movies is the critically acclaimed Dead Poets Society, starring Robbie Williams. Ethan and Robert Sean Leonard have been friends since they appeared in Dead Poet’s Society together.
- Eleanor Henderson wrote the first draft of Ten Thousand Saints as a graduate student while studying at the University of Virginia (MFA Creative Writing ’05). The novel went on to be named one of the 10 Best Books of 2011 by the New York Times. It was also a finalist for the Art Seidenbaum Award for First Fiction from the Los Angeles Times.
- Actress Hailee Steinfeld and the cast recalled how hard it was to film in New York City because the metropolis looked too clean for the look they were going for. “It was really hard…every angle you move the camera there’s like CitiBikes…but garbage is really cheap! It goes a long way. We have a lot of garbage on set,” writer/director Shari Springer Berman said. But in the end the trash for the set was free!
